Copyright & fair use issues

Section 107 of the Copyright Act in the USA defines fair use as follows:

The fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include —

the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
the nature of the copyrighted work;
the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole;
and the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work
.

My understanding of UK copyright is that the fair-dealing and teaching exemptions are similar to the USA laws.

This blog has a non-profit educational purpose. In quoting snippets of the works referred to in this blog, I hope that I draw attention to the works, and I always recommend that the original be read in its entirety.

By so doing, I believe that I increase the market for the original work, rather than diminish it.

Most quotes are from the abstract already available on the internet, rather than the main text. Again, I do not think this diminishes the market for the work because the abstracts are available on the internet without charge. Publishers publish abstracts to increase interest in the work, rather than to diminish it. I merely amplify this effect.

Quotations from main text are from papers that are freely available (not behind a paywall), under Creative Commons etc.

If anyone has a problem with any quote or illustration as an issue with copyright, and would like acknowledgement or removal, I would happily do so. Any infringement of copyright is unintentional, and can easily be corrected by responding to the individual post.
